KEYNOTE PRESENTATIONS FROM:
Maria Meyer
Maria is
an entrepreneur, author, trainer, keynote speaker—and a caregiver. In 1993 when her
father-in-law suffered a stroke, Maria became aware of the need for better
information about how to care for an aging parent, a responsibility shared by
millions. That experience led Maria to found CareTrust Publications and to
co-author the award-winning guide, The Comfort of Home® A Complete Guide for
Caregivers—now in its third edition, earning the Benjamin Franklin Award in the
health category and FOREWORD Magazine Book of the Year Award 2008 Finalist..
Maria has now co-authored a caregiver guide series—including the MS, Stroke,
Parkinson, Alzheimer’s, Chronic Lung Disease, Chronic Heart Failure and Chronic
Liver Disease editions.
With a the positive message of caregiver empowerment and the importance of finding humor in the caregiver’s day, she is a keynote speaker and workshop leader on caregiver topics to health care professionals and community groups. Maria is the California Caregiver Community Action Network volunteer for the National Family Caregiver Association in the United States. Maria and her husband live in San Francisco.
Lyn Hester
Lyn conducts
workshops on Stress Management through the use of Humor, and How to
Incorporate Humor into your Life. Since founding The International Center for
Humor and Health, Lyn has delivered her message to thousands of people.
She was the driving force behind the development of M.I.R.T.H. (Medical Institute for Recovery Through Humor) formerly a rehabilitation wing at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center that promoted the healing effects of humor. The M.I.R.T.H. wing and its philosophy have been featured in numerous local, national and international publications including: the London Times, Southwest Airlines Spirit Magazine, ABC Online, USA Today, the New York Post and was the subject of a segment on both Fox and PBS.
Lyn is Vice President of Marketing and Community Services for INTEGRIS Health, a 14-hospital system and the largest Oklahoma-owned system in the state. Lyn holds a Fellowship in the International Healthy Communities Forum and is national chairman of Community Benefits for the Association of Community Health Improvement.

Objectives:
- View three “case dramatizations” that illustrate ethical dilemmas in the provision of care to older adults.
- Discuss the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-malfeasance and truth telling and apply these to the cases.
Discuss decision-making capacity and paternalism/maternalism.
Consider helpful responses for the resolution of ethical conflicts.

Pre-Conference Workshop: Art Therapy Illuminating New Possibilities for
Healing and Growth
Presenters: Laura
Aube, BFA, MS, ATR-BC, LPC and Kayra Joy MS, ATR-BC
Description: This course will introduce participants to the field of art
therapy and the work of art therapist.
Participants will be exposed to the careers of two professional art
therapist with over twenty years combined experience working in hospice,
residential treatment, psychiatric hospital, community outreach, and private
practice settings. Examples of how art
therapy addresses the emotional and psychological needs of children, adults,
and families facing issues of trauma, grief and loss, depression, chronic
illness, and addictions will be provided.
Participants will have the opportunity to experience the use of art
media and the creative process to foster self-expression, create coping skills,
manage stress, and strengthen a sense of self.
